Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future The European Union is criticizing the Albanian government for not respecting the rights of the people with disabilities.
The EU Ambassador in Tirana, Ettore Sequi, underlined that there is still a lack of support for the people with disabilities, while their rights are a priority of the European Union.
“All EU member countries must respect the human rights, part of which are the people with disabilities, on of the EU priorities. Albania has still very much to do. In the progress report of 2011 there is a serious discrimination of this category. It is a duty of the state to secure equal rights and access for their services. We encourage the Albanian government to turn this into a reality”, Sequi declared.
Ombudsman Igli Totozani underlined the lack of access that the people with disabilities have in social services, considering it an exlclusion.
“People with disabilities remain among the most ignored categories in the Albanian society, being denied their access to school, to find a job, a house and to create a family as everyone else. Most of the disabled people have difficulties with their access in shops and transport vehicles, but also to information. Regardless the good legal provisions, often they are not respected or are not followed by the necessary budgets”, Totozani declared.
The Head of the National Council for Disabled People, Sinan Tafaj, declared that there are disabled people who do not profit their privileges, and don’t even have their status.
“We have many challenges ahead today. We have groups that are still unable to profit from what they are entitled to. There are deaf people, people with mental problems that are unable to treat their diseas or find a final solution in the legislation. We have a series of other problems that are still not mentioned, such as social exclusion and stigmatization, starting from the politicians”, Tafaj declared.
These declarations were held in the First Conference for the Rights of People with Disabilities, as integral part of the human rights.
