A police operation that was coordinated in five cities resulted with the
arrest of 12 persons suspected for piracy against several digital
platforms.
The Police in Tirane, Elbasan, Durres, Gramsh and Mallakaster executed 20 Tirana Court Orders for searching commercial objects and residences where the suspects illegally distributed signals of digital companies such as “Digitalb”, “Tring”, “Sky”, “Nova” etc.
Among the arrested suspects there are four computer engineers and one police agent, all of them arrested over Computer Fraud charges.
The details of the operation were made public by the Spokesperson for the Tirana Police, Alma Katragjini.
“Police agents searched and seized several cloned equipments that were used for illegal distribution of these TV signals. Police is continuing the investigation for discovering other persons who were involved in this crime”, Katragjini declared.
General Prosecution sources declared for Top-Channel that a task-force has been established in five Albanian cities, who are investigating individuals and cable companies that distribute programs owned by “Digitalb”.
Piracy with “Digitalb” programs is an old problem, and although the company has reported this theft several times, which has caused them millions of EUR in damages, the problem remains. In the recent times, police structures have cooperated with the Prosecution against piracy.
Economic Crime Department leaders confirm that they will fight piracy with zero tolerance, by even punishing citizens who use pirated equipments for receiving the signal of “Digitalb”.
The Media Parliamentary Commission is reviewing a draft-law for the media, and interest groups have expressed their suggestions for harsher sanctions against pirate companies.
Although the National Council of Radio and Televisions has fined these companies in the past, the execution of the court orders for implementing the fines still remains a problem.
