Diabetes is turning into a real threat for the health of the Albanian
patients. Doctors say that most of these patients don’t know that they
have it, and allow the disease to advance, since it has not troubling
signs.
“Diabetes is increasing in Albania and throughout the world. Albania has alarming figures, since 5% of the population is affected by diabetes. 50% of this population has not been diagnosed. There are 40-47.000 persons that are being treated, but 50.000 others have not been diagnosed, hence they must raise awareness to diagnose it in the early stages”, declared Agron Ylli, chief of the Endocrinology department.
The high number of diabetes patient is related with sedentary life and the bad food that has flooded the Albanian market after the ‘90s.
“The most endangered population is the one that has it in the family, obese people and those who have hypertension, especially after their fifties”, he added.
