Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future Before returning from New York, the Albanian Prime Minister, Sali
Berisha, gave an interview for CNN International, for the European
Economic Crisis and Albania’s aspirations for becoming an EU member.
Rebeka Anderson, who interviewed the Albanian Prime Minister, said that the economic crisis is a battle that doesn’t belong to Greece only, but also to almost 750.000 Albanian emigrants that are sending less money to their families, when remittances are as important for the Albanian economy that in 2009 they consisted 9% of the GDP. By comparing Albania’s 3.5% economic growth with the 0.2% of the EU, CNN asked the Albanian Prime Minister why Albania was so keen to join such a mess.
“I remain focused and the EU integration is and will remain a high priority project for my country. We will make everything possible to achieve what is needed for deserving it, such as the EU standards, reforms and practices. I consider it as a process that is totally based on merits”, Berisha declared.
To the question why Albania wanted to become part of an economic space that is experiencing a very dangerous phase, as described by IMF, Berisha answers:
“It is true that this is a serious crisis, but I fully trust that the European nations have the potential for overcoming it, and Albania has no reason to slow down its efforts for the EU integration. I trust that Euro, regardless the difficulties of the moment, will continue to be maybe one of Europe’s best heritages of all times”.
