Joana Deimel, a Balkan Expert, said in an interview for Deutsche Welle, in Germany, that the confrontational political crisis in Albania is nothing new. The vote-purchase accusations were raised after the elections of 2017 as well, but nothing was done.
“Unfortunately, demonstrations in Albania have always been organized by the opposition. There have been violence and have been misused, creating this way some deep political crises. They are circulating the same accusations. When the Socialist Party was in power, they were accusing the Democratic Party of corruption and criminal times. Now the Democratic Party accuses Edi Rama for the same thing. Unfortunately, the confrontational course has been a characteristic of Albania for a long time. Blocking the functionality of the parliament should no longer be an instrument of politics”, Deimel said.
When asked if she sees the creation of a new opposition within the opposition, since new MPs are accepting the mandate, after the 57 others resigned, Deimel said that the ones who renounced their mandates behaved irresponsibly, but Basha’s and SMI’s plan seems to be failing, because there are MPs who are creating the new opposition. If a new spirit is created by this opposition, ending the confrontational and paralyzing system, it could even be Basha’s demise, according to Deimel.
