Declaration of Independence in Elbasan

On 25 November 2012, Elbasan was the first city in Albania that raised
the flag of independence laying this way the first stone of national
independence foundation.

The activities started with a commemoration of patriot Aqif Pasha Elbasani, one of the delegates who signed the independence. The Albanian Prime Minister, Sali Berisha; the Mayor of Elbasan, Qazim Sejdiu and the Prefect of the Elbasan District, Shefqet Deliallisi, revealed the memorial that honoured the 37 delegates from Elbasan who signed the Declaration of Independence in Vlore, on 28 November 1912, such as Lef Nosi, Shefqet Daiu, Mit’hat Frasheri and Qemal Karaosmani.

The memorial and statue of Aqif Pasha Elbasani are placed on the city boulevard that holds his name. Prime Minister Berisha and the other participants inaugurated the statue of Lef Nosi, the patriot, politician and scholar from Elbasan who preserved the document of the Declaration of Independence 100 years ago.

“The Albanians from Albania, Kosova, Macedonia, Montenegro and wherever they are in the world, honour this giant man and the other leaders of Elbasan who declared the independence in Elbasan. This declaration honours every Albanian, Balkan and European citizen. 100 years ago, the wise men of this city sanctioned that the Albanians should live in complete freedom and by respecting the human rights for everyone”, Berisha declared.

Mayor Qazim Sejdini declared that the history has not yet given Elbasan the right place for their major contribution.
