Crisis causes bad nutrition

The economic crisis increased not only poverty in most of the country, but also reduced the quality of food.

A recent study of the Albanian Centre for Economic Researches, spread in six cities (Tirana, Kukes, Has, Tropoje, Shkoder, Puke and Malesi e Madhe) showed that food prices have increased since 2008.

Most of the family incomes are used for food. Citizens say that they have replaced beef with chicken and have removed fruits, vegetables and sweets from their daily menu.

The only products they still buy on a regular basis are oil, sugar, bread, milk, potatoes and beans. Most of the Albanians who live in the rural parts of the capital, and also in northern Albania, eat smaller portions or food and are unable to buy important products for their children and themselves.

A big problem remains electricity, which is expensive. Most of them use lumber and gas for heating.

While the situation aggravates, the population that lives in rural areas is employed in agriculture, a sector that faces difficulties, since most of the land is unworkable. This is due to the high price of agricultural activities. The main reason is the low level of investments in the Domestic Agricultural Production, the high price of agricultural inputs and gas; the degradation of land and the low number of people who own lands.
