Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future The Supreme Court decided to suspend the Prosecution’s case against the
former Minister of Economy, Dritan Prifti, and his Deputy Minister,
Leonard Beqiri, both charged of passive corruption.
The decision was taken right after the Prosecution withdrew the charges. Prosecutor Bujar Sheshi declared that since the Court considered the video registration as obsolete, there was no sense to continue the trial since all the other evidence were related to the main one, the video.
The defending lawyers of both high rank officials released a press statement, saying that the Prosecution withdrew the charges after the Supreme Court had ruled that the video was obsolete.
“The Prosecution withdrew the charges, hence there is nothing to continue for”, declared Vladimir Meci, defending lawyer of Leonard Beqiri.
The trial against Dritan Prifti and his Deputy Minister started on April 2012 and although the defense asked the Supreme Court to find them innocent or suspend the case, the final decision was left on the General Prosecution’s hands. Earlier the year the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the former Deputy Prime Minister, Ilir Meta, finding him innocent for corruption charges.
Prifti: Happy with the Court’s decision
Dritan Prifti reacted after the Prosecution decided to withdraw, declaring that he was convinced that it would end that way.
He said that he is happy that the Supreme Court suspended the trial for lack of evidence.
“I was sure that it would end this way, because the video doesn’t have any corruptive act”, the Minister of Economy declared.
