The copper mine in Spac, where former communist prisoners used to work during their sentences, has been reactivated.
The Turkish Company Tete Albania, which has a concession agreement for the Albanian copper industry, has built the copper enriching plant in Spach through an investment that took 11 million USD for the first phase only.
The plant will employ 300 workers and will start operating this February or March.
The company foresees to produce almost 20,000 tons of copper concentrate for the next 10 years, which will be enriched at the newly-built plant, giving copper a higher export price and also more profits to the Albanian economy.
Spac is the second-biggest copper mine in Albania, after Munella.
Spac was created in 1954 and has been exploited by the communist regime through forced labour of prisoners.
The mine has a reserve of 2.8 million tons, according to recent studies.
The copper industry has faced many problems recently, mostly due to lower prices caused by the global crisis. But with the world economy back on track, it seems that the copper industry is recovering.
