The Constitutional Court suspended the decision of the Council of Ministers for registering the IMEI numbers of cell phones.
The Constitutional decision was taken after opposition MPs considered it anti-constitutional.
The announcement published by the Constitutional Court says that the decision was taken unanimously by all members of the judge panel, and the explanatory arguments will be given in the days to come.
The government’s decision to register the IMEI numbers was proposed by the Ministry of Innovation and Public Administration.
The opposition opposed the initiative with the argument that it damages the privacy of Albanians and allows mass spying. The Minister of Innovation, Milena Harito, declared that the registration aimed to formalize the market, not to spy the citizens.
