The waste materials of Albanian villages and cities that end up in seas
have turned into an international problem. The Croatian MP, Dubravka
Suica, addressed with a letter to the European Commission.
TCH: You addressed to the Commission for a European solution to waste materials coming from Albanian and Montenegro. Why?
Dubravka Suica: Unfortunately, it is the same thing every year. Tons of waste materials come from the southern Adriatic. We have noted from their labels that they come from Montenegro, Albania, Greece and even Turkey. Some of these countries are EU members, some are candidate countries. The environment is one of the main issues of the Adriatic-Ionian strategy. My argument is how can we keep our deas clean. The most serious cases appeared in Peljesac, Trstenik and Mljet. There are eight countries involved in this, not all EU members, but we all must take care of our environment.
TCH: Since the requests of Croatia arrived mainly a few weeks after floods, who could the Commission intervene? Through the Adriatic-Ionnian Strategy, IPA funds, or through emergency assistance in case of floods?
Dubravka Suica: If not the Commission, the Environment Agency, someone from the Euroepan Commission or the EU, needs to intervene. Our countries need to take care of those levels that we have approved, that’s why I showed those photos.
TCH: We see this comes from Albania…
Dubravka Suica: Yes, but not only from Albania. This comes from Greece. My idea is to raise public awareness.
TCH: Do you think this might be related to floods but also to uncontrolled dumping of waste materials from these countries, by damaging the environment and the Croatian tourism?
Dubravka Suica: I think that local wastes are not managed properly in many of these countries and that is why I requested public awareness.
