“Cold relations” with Serbia

One day after meeting the Socialist Party leadership about the Presheva
situation and the elections in Albania, the US Ambassador, Alexander
Arvizu, continued his meetings with the New Democratic Spirit leader,
Bamir Topi.

The situation in Presheva was considered unacceptable, but Topi and Arvizu declared that official Tirana should not interrupt the communication with Belgrade and the Albania state leaders should stop nationalistic rhetoric.

The US Ambassador added that the country has entered in an election climate.

“It’s important for Prishtina and Belgrade to continue dialogue. Albanians know that they live in many Balkan regions, but they see at Tirana and its government the leaders of their orientation. It is absolutely important to integrate Western Balkans to Europe. We need a positive leadership from Tirana. It is important to resist to the temptation of nationalistic rhetoric, especially for the elections. It only deviates attention from more important goals that all Albanians share together”, Arvizu declared.

“Communication should not be interrupted. I would say that the Albanian government should continue to communicate with the Serbian government, so that things can be discussed better. On the other hand I would encourage the dialogue between Belgrade and Prishtina, and include in these discussions the fate of the Presheva citizens and the behaviour standard of the Serbian government”, Topi declared.

Topi: CEC must do its role for the process

While the American ambassador avoided declarations regarding the increased tension for the elections in Albania, the NDS leader declared that CEC should administer free elections to enable what the country needs most, a political rotation.

“The administration should make the Albanians calmer and participate in the elections, which is on their interest. If it was up to politicians, they would stay on the same post for 100 years. Our principle is rotation, not only for removing one individual and bring another, but because Albania needs a rotation of elites and new generations. Albania doesn’t belong only to one or two individuals, but to everyone”, Topi declared.
