CoE rapporteurs: Situation has improved

The Council of Europe rapporteurs who are visiting Tirana on their
fact-collecting mission about Albania’s progress, expressed their
optimism after meeting the Albanian authorities.

Rapporteurs Tomas Jirsa and Grigore Petrenco valued the progress in the political cooperation between the main parties.

“We have met many Albanian authorities and it is evident that the political situation has improved. We have noticed that there is cooperation between the parties and the situation is clear”, the rapporteurs declared.

They also mentioned the immunity and respect of the Constitution during the presidential elections.

“The immunity issue is very important, and we discussed it with the Albanian authorities. Meanwhile we were guaranteed that the Constitution will be implemented in the next Presidential elections”, the Rapporteurs declared.

As regards the January 21st events, they declared that they have treated it with the representatives of the different institutions, but they have refused to give any details.

“All legal means should be used for reaching a conclusion. We suggest to leave it up to the institutions”, the rapporteurs declared.

The final report of the observatory mission will be published later, after all respective instances of the European Commission will be discussed.

During they visit in Tirana, the rapporteurs first met the Socialist leader, Edi Rama, who promised that the opposition will commit for voting the qualified majority laws.

Later they met the Albanian President, Bamir Topi, in which the Reviewed Action Plan for the 12 key priorities set by the European Commission Opinion was valued as a necessary step for realizing the Albanian aspiration for an official EU integration.
