The OECD office against crime and drug traffic, publishes a detailed
report on the production and consumption of illegal drugs throughout the
world.
The report shows that this year, regardless the fight that the governments throughout the world conduct against the drug traffic, the consumption will keep growing. OECD says that there are 210 million people in the world who use illegal drugs eacu year, 200.000 of whom die.
But the most interesting data is related with its price. The source for Albania is the state police, the Antidrug unit. It seems that the cocaine price on the street varies from 62 Euro per gram in the United Kingdom to 155 Euro in Norway.
The Albanian streets, according to our state police, sell it from 80 to 105 USD per gram. The cocaine market in Europe mounts to 33 billion USD, three times bigger than Albania’s GDP.
Albania has an insignificant weight in this market, but the consumption levels remain high in proportion with the population. 8 in every 100 people in Albania use cocaine, while this number in Bosnia and Bulgaria is 6 out of 100 people, and in Rumania and Serbia is respectively 1 and 5.
The good news is that compared with the per capita revenues, the drug price in Albania is among the highest in Europe, which limits its usage.
