The US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, valued the agreement reached
between Kosovo and Serbia and declared that it is approaching Prishtina
to the EU integration.
Speaking from Tunisia for the Voice of America, Clinton declared that “the much debated “footnote” issue is a note that refers to the Resolution 1244 of the UN Security Council, which opened the road for Kosov’s independence. It made Serbia remove the security forces. The International Court of Justice reviewed the resolution carefully and the entire world agreed that Kosovo’s independence declaration doesn’t violate the Resolution 1244. I believe that this is a very smart and courageous decision by the government, and that it will approach Europe to Kosovo, and it will help increasing the number of people that will recognize it”, Clinton declared.
To the question if there is the need to undertake defensive conditions to the measures that Serbia could set in the future, for not allowing Kosovo’s EU accession, Clinton declared that Kosovo is approaching to the EU membership, referring to the agreement reached in Brussels.
“This reinforces the status as an independent country. Kosovo will now sit as an equal partner and will be able to speak will its voice”, secretary Clinton declared.
For the refusal of some European countries to recognize Kosovo’s independence, Clinton declared that this will need time,.
“I think that being in a situation in which Kosovo will sit to dialogue with these countries in regional initiatives, the chances for a possible recognition will increase”, she declared.
In a press release from Tunisia, the US Secretary of State thanked the EU for approaching the two countries and she underlined their common EU perspective.
