Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future The climate changes are being more visible even in Albania, where the
coastal line has entered 50 meters inland by destroying vegetation,
tourist beaches and by creating swamps.
Thie phenomenon has even started to threaten the populated areas in some regions, by bringing mosquitoes and infective diseases that can be caused by these insects.
The climate change has brought a soft winter that enables tropical plants to grow even in Albania, while the temperature levels have changed drastically and are causing droughts, fires, storms and floods that directly affect the human health.
With the support of the German Embassy, the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization have planned a strategy for adapting to these changes.
“With such a well articulated plan, we have a good oriented health system for special situations. The climate changes are not going in the right direction. The parameters are getting worse, especially with the air quality and water sources. Another problem are the infective diseases, their transmitting vectors, and the carbon oxide added to the air, which directly affect the human health. Another problem are the natural disasters”, declared the Health Minister, Petrit Vasili.
One of the main elements of the climate changes is the pollution levels that in our country are two or three times higher than the EU recommendations.
“We have very high levels. The polluted particles in big cities and other stations are twice higher than the allowed norms. These are not only dangerous, but can cause 500 hundred deaths above the normal”, says Agron Deliu from the Public Health Institution.
