Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future After the consequent floods, our country was hit by a long drought that
has been considered as fatal for the energy experts. Environment
specialists say that these are the consequences of the climate change.
The Minister of Environment, Fatmir Mediu, declared that the energy sector is the most affected and Albania is aiming to build more hydro power plants.
“There are 150 hydropower plants that have been given with concession, the biggest of which are at the Devoll cascade and Ashta. Albania has also supported and sees with great interest the projects in wind energy, which will start soon in Albania. The increase of the energy efficiency is a priority that should be seen with attention by the Ministry of Environment. We have many reserves, and the efficiency in producing energy means at any moment that it will make our investments a priority. Efficiency means exploiting all existing resources with the necessary criteria”, Mediu declared.
For facing the Shkoder area floods, Mediu declared that the 10 million USD investments are in the first implementation phase. A second phase will be needed for deepening the Buna River.
10 million USD have been invested in Shkoder, as government budget, with World Bank funds. There are three phases: the emergent interventions, the midterm interventions and the perspective interventions. Avoiding floods needs other investments. The second phase is the deepening of Buna. We will take other measures for the entire Shkoder water collector basin”, Mediu declared.
The climate changes are being accompanied with a great extension of the erosion, not only in riverbanks, but also in agricultural lands. For this reason, was asked the planning of a national strategy for adopting to the climate changes.
