Civil Code amends approved

The Albanian majority and opposition made a further positive step by
approving through consensus the Civil Code amends, after long technical
discussions that went on for several days.

The amends regulate the citizens’ relations in a civil process, when they are facing slander or offence that damages their image, dignity or reputation, even through internet pages.

The other challenge is the final approval of the amends proposed by the government in the Penal Code, a law that also requires qualified majority. The Socialists and the Democrats approved it in principal and are expected to discuss each article.

Strong measures proposed for domestic violence

One of the propositions, which is attracting the attention of the civil society, is the harsh punishment for domestic violence.

The civil society proposed new penal measures against systematic domestic violence, which is seen as the main cause of murders and injuries within families. They also suggested establishing harsher penalizations for those who have been sentenced by the court for domestic violence.

“We have a harsh measure in article 50 of the Penal Code, but it is not implemented. There are even cases when domestic violence is used as aggravating circumstance”, declared Aurela Anastasi, a well known legal representative in Albania.

Representatives from the civil society demanded to review or remove the penal sentencing for the human traffic victims.
