Citizenship for all Albanians

04/12/2012 00:00

From the room where 100 years ago, Ismail Qemali held the first meeting
of the first Albanian government after the declaration of independence,
Prime Minister Sali Berisha made a surprise announcement, as part of
“United with each other, united with Europe” initiative.

Berisha announced a law that gives unconditioned citizenship to any Albanian, wherever he might live. By recalling the ugly historic facts that divided the Albanians in five different states, Berisha declared that this law is an initiative for the unification of our nationals.

Berisha was careful to precede the suspicions that this law hides electoral goals by saying that the law would enter in effect after the elections. Berisha asked the opposition to join them in this initiative, and also for the three remaining laws that are a condition for the EU candidate status.

RBA protests against government’s meeting in Vlore

Dozens of Red and Black Alliance supporters organized a protest against the government meeting in Vlore, at the Museum of Independence.

The RBA activists were stopped by dozens of police forces, who used even tear gas. The large number of National Guard agents and the tear gas made the activists leave the main boulevard, while the government was continuing with the meeting.

Kavaje, RBA activists arrested

The 35 RBA activists who were returning from Vlore were stopped by police in Kavaja, without any explanation.

Among the arrested there are also 12 women, all held in Kavaja’s police station. There is no explanation for the arrest, while the activists say that this is a revenge for the protest that they held in Vlore.
