Karin Staffer, the newest Rapporteur of the CDU/CSU at the EU Commission spoke about Albania in an interview for Deutsche Welle.

She said that Albania needs to fulfill its duties before becoming part of the EU: “Citizens are not pleased and they express it thorugh protests. This is the meaning of democracy. Of course, it is a difficult situation, but it doesn’t mean that the Parliament and President should block the reforms. I think that the reforms were blocked due to the political situation, and it doesn’t help”, she said.

“I don’t think that the German government should interfere with such a conflict. We are involved in the EU and every dialogue should be done through the EU”, she said.

DW: But your party was the one that created additional conditions for Albania, twice in the past years.

Staffer: We must wait for the newest report of the EU Commission for Albania. Of course we pay attention to the situation and we have an idea about the report.

DW: Laas year Albania received an almost promise that the negotiations would open. Do you think that because of the crisis, Albania has made any step back?

Staffer: You said it was almost promised. I don’t think we should see it that way. The EU is nos tjust a unified market, or a joint economic area, but a community of basic values, such as the rule of law, fight against corruption and other basic rights that we want to guarantee to the people.
