24 hours before the European Council decides whether Albania’s EU accession negotiations will be opened, the prestigious European newspaper, Financial Times, has dedicated a special article to the case.
In this article, FT notes the skepticism of France, Netherlands, and Denmark.
In an interview for FT, Albania’s acting Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Gent Cakaj, declared that blocking the EU accession negotiations would diminish the role of the EU in the region.
According to Cakaj, a further complication of the situation would only bring divisions between the countries that are in favor and against opening the EU accession negotiations.
France, which has been skeptical about the EU enlargement, stressed that the accession process must be reviewed before considering other countries’ accession. Cakaj says that this uncertainty is based only on false dilemmas.
