Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future The biggest oyster farm in Albania, the Butrint Lake, is suffering
considerable damage in the last day, due to the temperatures that go
over 28 degrees.
This has decreased the percentage of oxygen in the water and 90% of the mollusks have died. The phenomenon has affected the new oysters too, at 20%. The water circulation at the Vivari Canal has not been good, and the water circulation was blocked.
The damage is colossal, mounting up to 15-20 ton for each of the 78 divisions.
“This has never happened. These are problems that happen because of the weather, but Butrint has never had such problems”, declared Fredi Gjika, from the Oyster Producers’ Association.
The Head of the Directory for Oysters and Fishing says that the phenomenon is related to the climate.
“These are phenomena that do not depend from us. There are many factors that cause this, but most of it is the insufficient water from the Butrint Canal”, declared Arjan Demiri.
Butrint has 78 oyster implants, with 62 of them being functional. The annual production of the oysters goes to 1300 ton, and part of it doesn’t find a market.
The international market was interrupted in 1994, after the intoxication with sulphide gas that was produced by the bed of the lake. The problem was resolved by widening the Bistrica riverbed, which supplied fresh water to the lake.
