Business: Taxes are suffocating us

Dozens of businesses in Albania are risking bankruptcy due to the high
fines received by the Tax Office and the government’s failure to
reimburse the VAT.

They expressed their concern at the US Chamber of Commerce. Although they had asked the presence of the General Director of the Tax Office in these meeting, Mr. Gazmir Spahija was not there.

“The Albanian businesses are facing serious problems. Repeated and unjustified controls have hampered their lives. The previous tax controls are considered a mistake by other inspections that will follow. The inspectors change the interpretation of the law. There are inspectors who are still controlling for data and activity since 2006. This situation is far from the promise to create a stable climate for business and a welcoming atmosphere for the investors, especially the foreign ones”, declared David Anderson, president of the US Chamber of Commerce.

According to the president of the US Chamber of Commerce, the failure to reimburse VAT is crating essential obstacles in the business activity.

“The reimbursement of VAT is continuing very slowly. The legal deadlines have expired and this has caused essential obstacles in the activity of the companies. This affects the financial conditions of the companies and especially the liquidity. According to the law, businesses claim that the VAT reimbursement should include the interest for the period that it has not been paid”, Anderson declared.

The cases presented at the US Chamber of Commerce are related with the industry of communication, cement production, fuel extractions, import-export, private universities, etc.
