Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future The unstudied and abusive exploitation of the chrome mines in Bulqize is
destroying the most precious resource. The most damaged part of the
Area D mine has had massive landslides, what the miners call “the funnel
phenomenon”.
Jorgo Kola, an old engineer at the Chrome Mine shows for Top Channel that the problem was recognized since the ‘80s, that the mines should be operated in the deepest areas, rather than the dangerous ones. He explains why the destructions are happening, like that of one day ago.
“It is impossible to work in the deep. Today we are working for taking the chrome that has direct contact with the surface. Since the root rocks are not there any more, the chrome creates spaces that cannot keep anymore friable material”, Kola declared.
Another accident that caused an entire building disappear made the authorities to proceed with a careful study in the ‘80s, for avoiding destruction. The old engineer of this mine, now a pensioner, says that this phenomenon threatens human lives.
“The main problem today is for the safety of the people. If there were signs for these spaces at that time, today the people should not be allowed to enter the aglleries, although the spaces are visible. People could mistakenly go there and die”, Kola declared.
One of the main critics made to the Company by the Ministry of Economy was that the mines are going out of functionality. The destructions happened at the area D, where other fatal accidents have killed miners.
