Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future The Bulgarian government announced its resignation after protest spread
throughout the nation against the anti-crisis measures and increased
electricity prices. The news was confirmed by Prime Minister Boiko
Borisov.
“I will not be part of a government in which police beat people”, Borisov declared.
Thousands of citizens started to protest in Bulgaria, the poorest country in the EU. The main reason of this anger was the increased electricity price. Borisov tried to calm the situation by promising lower prices. He promised to punish foreign companies that operate in Bulgaria and charge more than they should.
25 people were sent to hospital after violent clashes with the police this Tuesday. The rage of the Bulgarian people peaked with the high energy price, monopolies, low standard of living and corruption, according to BBC.
It is still unknown if the Parliamentary elections of July will be held earlier. Borisov promised to remove the license of the biggest energy company in Central Europe, CEZ. which will put Bulgaria in conflict with the Czech Republic, a close EU partner. This is the second case after Albania that CEZ has its license removed for violations.
