The Albanian Minister of Integration, Majlinda Bregu, greeted the
conclusions of the EU Council of Foreign Ministers for Western Balkan.
The Council valued the latest positive events, the cooperation between the government and the opposition, the establishment of the Parliamentary Commission for the electoral reform, the establishment of the working team for the Parliamentary Regulation Reform and the voting of laws that require qualified majority.
“The conclusions of the Council valued the May 8th local elections as competitive and transparent, by encouraging the continuity of the constructive political dialogue and for the proper functioning of the democratic institutions. These positive developments should help for overcoming the stalemate that has dominated the country’s political scene in the last two years. As you can clearly understand by the Council’s conclusions, the only problem that has blocked the candidate status for the last two years, regardless the empty pretenses of the Socialist Party leader, who doesn’t accept his responsibilities even today, was the political stalemate created by the opposition’s lack of will to vote the laws of qualified majority; for engaging with the electoral reform and for cooperating for fulfilling the 12 EU criteria”, the Minister Bregu underlined, repeating the rhetoric held by the Democrats after the EU refusal to open the membership talks.
“If the opposition would not have refused to cooperate with the majority for the political criteria, the candidate status would be reality today. The conclusions of the Council of Foreign Ministers underline that the EU remains committed to support Albania in the EU integration process. The Albanian government remains committed to guarantee the continuity of the cooperation with the opposition and the civil society, with the major obligation of fulfilling the Copenhagen’s criteria and the EU integration obligations”, Bregu declared.
