Bread price expected to increase

Bread producers warn a bread price increase in the country. 100 kg of flour were sold this Monday for 7200 ALL.

The crisis of the other countries and the drought of this year, together with the unstable main foreign currencies, such as Euro and Dollar, have directly affected the flour price increase. Bread producers say that the price for 100 KG of flour used  to be 5800 ALL only last year, but in 2012 it went 1200 ALL up. they say that Tirana has 1200 bakeries that produce bread, and many of them were opened this summer by emigrants that have returned from Greece.

But according to the old producers, the bakeries are facing difficulties and many of them are on the brink of bankruptcy. They don’t want to talk in front of the cameras, due to the pressure made by the respective departments through the tax inspectors, but according to them, flour in Albania is produced only by three or four factories that supply all bread producers with the same price. Although one standard piece of bread in the Albanian market is sold with 80 ALL, there are bakeries that sell them for 70 or 60 ALL. But according to the producers, the lower price has other disadvantages that damage the consumers. Some of the producers abuse with the weight and others with the flour quality and the quantity of additives.

Low priced flour is colored by falsified colors that make white bread look brown, the most preferred of the consumers. An initiative was taken in the first months of the year to pack bread with paper bags, rather than plastics. But the biggest problem comes from the bread components that harm the consumers’ health.
