Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future The European MP, Victor Bostinaru, underlined in his speech the
significance of the war against corruption and the pressures of the
Albanian media that criticize the government.
Bostinary mentioned the case when Top Channel suffered a series of attacks after broadcasting a video of Minister Ylli Pango requesting sexual favors to a young girl in exchange of a job.
“Can you accept the fact that after a media outlet showed a Minister requesting sexual favors in exchange of a job, and the media received a big fine, and this process is still underway? How can you support the war against corruption, when another case is still unsolved, that of the former deputy Prime Minister. I’m referring to the details, because there’s where the devils sleeps, such as in the case of Top Channel. I am not here to make favors to a company, but this is a question that is related with the accusations made by the government. They connected this company with the so called coup d’etat. Let us be serios. When we speak about accusations such as coup d’etat against the journalists of the free media, this is something about which you cannot lie”, Bostinaru declared.
Tanya Fayon, a former journalist and now an active European MP that favors EU enlargement, expressed the significance of an independent media and the journalist’s role for informing the public.
“I have good contacts with the journalists in Albania, and let’s be sincere, you only have one or two independent media. This is something very bad for the country. The media should not have political or business influences. It is very important to secure media pluralism and freedom of speech. It is very important for the media to have the needed freedom, because it has the role of a watchdog for the institutions and should give reliable and balanced news for the citizens, who deserve to know what happens with the future of the country”, Fayon declared.
