Albania has a new integrated border management strategy. The Albanian
Prime Minister, Edi Rama, criticized the former government and said
that the state was disintegrated.
“The work of institutions in the border was conducted independently from other institutions, but not in a good sense. Every institution has become a bureaucratic and abusive fraction, that has practically disintegrated the activity of the government, when the government should guarantee the management of the border. We are all witnesses of a severe heritage in this aspect, with radars that didn’t work, with relations that didn’t function even between institutions, and not even between institutions and citizens or businessmen”, Rama declared.
The Interior Minister, Saimir Tahiri, declared that the strategy stops abuses and cuts procedures.
“Our goal is to go from a closed sea from moratorium, to an open and safe sea for tourist and economic exploitation, by guaranteeing safety for citizens and economic development for businesses. This objective cannot be reached without the cooperation of all actors”, Tahiri declared.
The United States Ambassador, Alexander Arvizu, declared that the border management is an open challenge for Albania. He guaranteed United States support for this.
“The citizens’ movement has its own challenges. You should be careful with illegality. This is a challenge for the United States of America too. Advanced technology remains a challenge. The national security gets stronger by securing the border. It is important for Albania to be protected from terrorist attacks. For this are needed trained people and frequent inspections”, Arvizu declared.
The OSCE Ambassador underlined regional migration, which should not fall prey to prejudice.
“The citizens’ movement in other countries in the region should not be a matter of local prejudice. Migration is essential for the region. This spirit should continue to shape this work”, declared the OSCE ambassador.
Albania’s new border management strategy has a six year deadline for the complete implementation.
