One of the main figures of the Albanian opposition, Ben Blushi, treated a
series of issues of the political actuality on Top Channel’s program
“Top Story”, such as the economy, the political crisis, the elections of
2009 and 2011, the Socialist Party political program, the latest
developments inside the Socialist Party and other events, such as the
death of Leka Zogu and the books published by Blushi himself and Edi
Rama.
Critics against Rama
Blushi considered Rama’s decision to run for a fourth mandate as Mayor of Tirana, as one of the biggest political gaffes.
“I don’t think that we lost in 2011, but these elections should not be read as political elections, and no one can convince me that the Democrats who have taken most of the communes, have reason to repeat this in the future, same as I am not convinced that we will win again the municipalities that we took over from them. January 21st, the manipulations and many other events caused the avalanche that made us ask for a political vote. But the Albanians did not vote politically. This happened in Tirana, which had experienced depression in the recent years, being oppressed between the Socialist Party and the government. The city was feeling as being sacrificed in a political war, and this was the reason that there were less investments, less parking spaces, etc. In other conditions, we would have taken more votes. With better coalitions, Rama would not have run for Mayor, and this is a political gaffe. He was told not to, but he proved that he doesn’t listen to anyone, that he wants more power than he deserves. He will run for Prime Minister in 2013, and with this he told the Albanians that he can do anything, with an act of megalomania. I cannot accept one of his comments, saying that besides me and him, there could be no other candidates for the leadership of the Socialist Party. This is something that I cannot accept, not even for myself. Everyone can be replaced, and sometimes this can have a good effect.
Basha and Tirana’s Main square
“We didn’t have the chance to see Rama’s project, and I guarantee you that he sees with sadness the delays and the conflicts that stopped it from becoming reality. One of the things that he should have left behind was the stamp in the main square. I am sorry that we couldn’t see Rama’s dream, much different from what we had and what we have today. Today’s main square is more functional, but on the aesthetic point of view, it is a shame. Tirana doesn’t deserve that square. Our government always speaks about economic development, but they lent the money for the main square from Kuwait. This is unforgivable. What would a foreign country think when is asked for money to build the main square, when corruption gives to it a value that is 100 times higher than the real cost?”
A possible agreement with the SMI
Asked about any possible coalition with the Socialist Movement for Integration in the next elections of 2013, Blushi declared that the SMI has shown bad governing and three different faces in the last three years, and coalition with a person that changes constantly is not easy. According to Blushi, the SP should prepare to go to the elections without the SMI, and if there will be a pact, he cannot say if it’s a good or a bad thing.
January 21st. “We could have saved 4 lives”
As for the January 21st events, Blushi declared that he happened to be in Shkoder, on 2 April 1991, when the communist regime killed the protesters who were opposing the government, and that January 21st was much worse, more painful and scarier. Blushi said that it is undisputable that the four people were killed by Berisha, and that everyone saw it live on TV. The protesters were asking a better governing to overcome poverty, same as all other European protesters, who are never touched. “If Berisha killed them, we called the people in protest. I have participated in many demonstrations, but always among the ones I appealed”.
“Leka Zogu may rest in peace, but…”
The Socialist Party has given no official reaction for the death of the Heir of the Albanian Throne, Leka Zogu. Blushi expressed his condolences to the family and declared that the homages to Leka are deserved, and that the controversial figure of his father has received from history what he deserved – a controversial figure, but one of the best state-makers that Albania ever had.
As for Leka, Blushi feels the regret that Berisha, who honors him today, has spit on his face on 1997. For Blushi, the monarchy is a moment of the past. The Zogu family is a big patriotic family, but the debate for the monarchy is something else. Berisha opened the door to monarchy, a matter that is closed all over Europe. Blushi concluded that Albania cannot return to monarchy.
