Better in asylum…

Although most of senior citizens consider asylums a life punishment, the
number of requests has increased. Being alone and without support, the
Institution for Seniors Care is their only hope.

“The requests are higher than in the past years. Most of the people who apply come from families with social problems”, says the Director of Seniors Care Institution in Fier, Daniela Hasanaj.

The economic crisis has affected hundreds of Albanian families, most of whom are facing even divorces. In these conditions, senior citizens not only cannot find proper care, but they also face violence.

Dozens of senior women are found alone after their husbands have passed away. They file asylum requests after experiencing psychological and physical violence from their children.

“Women are the most common victims of domestic abuse. They come in our institution for this reason, because they feel violence in their families. These women are left only with their children, because their husbands have passed away. Social problems like unemployment often affect domestic abuses ”, Hasanaj declared.

The number of senior citizens who want to pass the last years of their lives in asylums has increased, since they have found themselves abandoned and without a place to live.
