Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future During a meeting with the youth of the European Popular Parties, Prime
Minister Sali Berisha considered January 21st an aggressive attack
against the government.
“There were four victims and I asked justice to investigate independently. January 21st was a normal day’s work and I couldn’t abandon my workplace”, Berisha declared, giving no direct comment about the court verdict and the defendants.
The verdict given two days ago by the Tirana Court brought strong reactions from the opposition, the majority’s coalition and even the US embassy, who declared that they were dismayed by this decision.
The Prime Minister refused to give any comment, emphasizing that he would never comment the court’s decision, while the Tirana Court considered the US embassy declaration an intervention. The US Ambassador answered by saying that this was an unfound accusation, since the US involvement came after a request made by the Prosecutor General and with the support of the Albanian government.
The Tirana Prosecution decided to address the Court of Appeal to challenge the decision of the Court of First Instance, which found the three defendants not guilty. This decision with be taken before February 17th.
