The Albanian Prime Minister explained Albania’s vote at the UN General Assembly, when our country abstained during the voting for accepting Palestine as an observer at the UN.

“Albania supports the solution of the conflict between Israel and Palestine. We believe that this is the most difficult and most complex issue in the planet, and it cannot be resolved bypassing the USA, since their role in the solution of this problem is irreplaceable”, Berisha declared, underlining that Palestine, which Albania has recognized as a country, and Israel, are both friends of Albania.

Meanwhile, according to the Turkish press, Albania’s vote has startled the relations with Turkey. The Turkish daily newspaper “Hurriyet” published the dialogue of the Turkish and Albanian Prime Ministers, Erdogan and Berisha. It says that Turkey promises that they will break the good relations with Albania if the vote will not be in favour of Palestine. The Albanian government was under a great pressure, as revealed by prestigious media outlets of the countries that had direct interest in this development. The Turkish Hurriyet underlined that this vote was conditioned by Erdogan with ending the relations that are considered excellent. On the other hand, Albania has also received pressure by the US and Israel, who have opposed the UN voting. Albania’s vote was commented by “Jerusalem Post”, an Israeli daily newspaper, which considered Albania a Muslim country that abstained on this issue. Being between this pressure from different allies, Albania was obliged to abstain, but even this neutral stance will apparently have consequences.
