Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future Albania is not one of those countries that accompanied the foundation of
the new state with the establishment of high education institutions.
30 years after declaring independence, Albania laid the first foundations of the high education, by inaugurating the High Pedagogic Institute by the Minister of Education of the time, Sejfulla Maleshova, in which worked some of the best known names of the Albanian teaching elite. After the communist regime sentenced Sejfulla Maleshova, the foundation date for the high education system in 1946 was postponed with 11 years. In 1957, in a date that coincided with the Russian Revolution, was created the Polytechnic University.
This isn’t true neither, because in 1951 was founded the High Polytechnic Institution that today, after 6 decades, has celebrated with pride its foundation as one of the most prestigious institutions of the high education in Albania.
For Prime Minister Berisha, the high education in Albania is a main priority of his government. The PM adds that the future of a country is better and safer with highly educated people. Although he admits that the quality of the Albanian education is not in the level of developed countries, Berisha defended the open doors policy in universities where today study more than 138.000 students, from 52.000 that used to be in 2005, removing the notion of what he called “the forbidden fruit” for the Albanian young people.
“Those who criticize this policy and who pretend that the universities have turned into unemployment pools, must be reminded that in Albania or anywhere in the world, the universities do not distribute employment orders, but the studies in Albania and around the world have proved that the graduated people have 50% more chances to get a job than those who haven’t graduated. The graduated gain 50 to 70% more revenues than the others”, Berisha declared.
The Prime Minister invited the professors and University leaders to continue working with the government for increasing the quality of Universities in Albania. He also reminded to the students that they their dedication to school will seal their future and that of the country.
