The Albanian Prime Minister, Sali Berisha, asked his cabinet to work
more not only for the priorities, which are conditions set by the EU for
the candidate status, but also for other standards that have been
identified in the progress-report as backward.
Berisha asked this commitment because he is sure that Albania doesn’t have too much chances to receive the status even this year, because, according to him, Albania is still blocked by the opposition leader, Edi Rama.
“Unimaginable! He announces his blocking on the week when the European countries start their meetings. The Albanains saw everything, as they saw it for the visa liberalization. They saw it for the second time with the EU candidate status, in the beginning of this week. Albania would not receive the status this week, but it could be evaluated for the serious steps. But Rama didn’t want this, because Albania’s evaluation is the end of his political career. He can only build his career on natural disasters or by blocking the reforms. He doesn’t see any other kind of career”, Berisha declared.
PM Berisha was sceptical for the opposition, when he declared that Rama might block the removal of immunities, another priority of the European Union, for which the Prime Minister asked the help of the reform director at the European Council. For progressing in this point, the Prime Minister wouldn’t oppose even Constitutional amends.
“I guaranteed them that the government is ready to vote the immunity, not only with organic laws, but also with Constitutional amends. The most important thing is that the Albanian officials, MPs or judges, will have no immunity. We will continue without interrupting the reforms on all areas that Edi Rama cannot block. He cannot block the transparency process. He can block the immunity removal, but each day that goes by shortens his political life and prepares the deepest defeat that he has known in the last 21 years”, Berisha declared.
The privatizations have been considered by the opposition as great corruptive affairs, but Berisha reconfirmed that a priority of his government is to expand them.
“The Bistrica and Mat hydropower plants will be the two next great acts that will be privatized. The privatizations have been a priority of my government, since we are convinced that such a process will increase the efficiency of our resources and services. But there is also a second reason. The privatization reduces corruption, another absolute priority of our government”, Berisha declared for the cabinet.
Berisha also mentioned the compensation for the former persecuted people.
“The persecuted people issue has had delays, due to the legal dispositions that had to be approved. However, by 20 March we will transfer the second installment for the politically persecuted people”, the Prime Minister promised.
As for the digitalization process in the country, Berisha congratulated the Ministry of Education for computerizing the state exam, and encouraged the rectors and deans to transmit this process to the university system too.
