Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future The Albanian Prime Minister did not hesitate to call Leka Zogu “King of Albanians”.
“Today passed away the King of Albanians, a great loss for the nation and our country”, Berisha declared.
The government stood in silence for honoring the king. What caught the attention more than the unusual homage that the government of the Republic of Albania made to Leka Zogu, was the sentence that the PM used for the monarchy referendum of 1997.
“I want to underline that the referendum was made during the communist rebellion, and cannot be considered a closed chapter. In that referendum prevailed the stalinist principle: ‘you cast ballots, we count them’, but the Albanians, from north to south, massively voted for their king”, Berisha declared.
It remains to be seen if this is a new political position of the Democratic Party, or just words that came out of the difficult mourn. However, the Albanian government announced this Saturday a national mourning day. The funeral ceremony will be organized in a commission headed by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Minister of Culture.
