Berisha: Media freedom, a holy task

The Albanian Prime Minister, Sali Berisha, used the traditional annual
meeting with journalists, publishers and analysts for expressing his
respect to the free speech and their profession.

For the PM, the media has a determining role in a free country, because the free speech is among the first values of a free society and that determines the human dignity.

“The free speech could be compared with only one thing… love, which means taking care, having a great and loyal dedication”, Berisha declared.

By considering as positive the fact that 2011 recorded no legal suit against any journalist, Berisha guaranteed the journalists that his government will make everything possible for the free speech to consolidate as a guaranteed freedom in Albania.

“Your role as defenders of the free speech has taken Albania out of the censure, and I wish once and for all, despite the difficulties that we all know. This role has an extraordinary significance”, Berisha declared.

The reception at the Palace of Brigades was a good occasion for Mr. Berisha to meet the journalists not for interviews or for announcing any news. However, the political comments were unavoidable, especially for the greatest political event of this year, the Presidential election.

Since the priorities of the state functionaries do not coincide with those of the media, Berisha considered 2012 as the year of the wreath, not for the President, but for the 100th anniversary of independence.
