Berisha: Life sentence for domestic crime against women

24/10/2012 00:00

The Albanian Prime Minister, Sali Berisha, proposed the removal of the
alternative punishments for domestic crime, trying to leave life
sentence as the only option.

Berisha made this proposal after the government passed the Council of Europe Convention for domestic and violence against women. The government leader accepted that the domestic crime has increased rapidly, turning into one of the most concerning problems of the Albanian society.

By severing the punishment, Berisha believes that this wave of murdering wives and daughters would be reduced. Berisha also declared that this punishment must be applied for the blood feud crimes, adding to the punishment the confiscation of their assets.

Berisha’s proposition found the support of the association for protecting the women’s rights.
