“Berisha lies about the roads”

The Socialist meeting for infrastructure and transport discussed the SP
vision for changing the situation of the current infrastructure
problems, which have often become cause of accidents, in their National
Rebirth Program.

The chairman of the working group declared that the car accident deaths have turned into routine news and get on main pages only when a public person is involved. Mr.Lame also compared the current situation of the roads with a description that an US missionary made for Albania when visiting it by the end of the 19th century.

“A US missionary reminds his trip to Elbasan: ‘We were surprised when we arrived at the Shkumbini road sidewalk. We saw a newly paved road, very well paved. We learned in Elbasan that the government had ordered the road to be built, but some of the money were stolen in Istanbul and some in Elbasan, making the builder to pave only the easiest parts’. Today we are all witnesses that the Albanian roads are paved with the same method”, Lame declared.

The opposition leader, Edi Rama, criticized the government by saying that the Durres-Kukes highway is not over yet, and that they have used eight different standards. Rama accused PM Berisha of lying when he says that 9000 km of roads have been built.

“We have today the report of the 9000 kilometers of paved roads, mentioned by the Prime Minister. In fact, these are not 9000 km, but 1300 km in the best case, and 900 km in the worst case. These 400 meters of difference between the best and worse case show the state in which we are living. A state without an inventory, a state that cannot show a master plan map for the infrastructure development”, Rama declared.

The worst killer on the road is state absence, according to Rama. He also promised that the key word of the Albanian Rebirth program will be the road standard, which has been absent for the last 20 years. Rama also mentioned the debt that the government has to the construction companies.

“Part of the economic drama in our country is the government’s debt to the firms that have signed contracts with the government. A debt that goes to 100 million USD and many other undeclared millions, because the construction companies have turned into slaves of the political power, while in a normal country they should demand indemnification for not giving the payment on time”, Rama declared.
