Azerbaijan, a country positioned in the roads that connect Western Asia
with Eastern Europe is not noted for a developed democracy, but the
great resources of oil and gas have made it one of the most coveted
countries for the governments and investors.
Albania is no exception, and the Albanian Prime Minister, Sali Berisha, has met the Azerbaijani President, Ilham Alijev, in any international event.
This time they met in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, and expressed the common will and the consolidation of the relations between the two countries.
Energy is the priority that connects the two countries, more specifically, the “Trans-Adriatic” pipeline that is competing with two other projects for bringing gas from Azerbaijan to Europe.
“Trans-Adriatic” is the only one that goes through Albania, and PM Berisha spoke with President Alijev about this matter.
We don’t know the details of the conversation, but Berisha has focused on the advantages that the “Trans-Adriatic” pipeline has over the two other projects, since it is the shortest road to Europe and has a vital significance for the energetic security and the development of Western Balkan and Europe.
The final decision will be taken by March. Until then, Albania and Azerbaijan, which has a decisive role in this project, has agreed to reinforce the cooperation, and will establish a joint structure – a suggestion of President Alijev – for following any possible cooperation initiative.
“We have discussed a series of matters: political cooperation, reinforcement of the economic connections, cooperation in energy, and we have agreed on all of these. I have no doubt that after this visit we will see quick and fruitful developments in the relations between our countries”, Alijev declared.
Berisha underlined that he agrees with President Alijev for having a close cooperation and for opening a new chapter in the relations between the friend countries.
After meeting his Azerbaijani homologue, Artur Rasizade, Berisha invited the oil and gas state company, “Socar”, to participate in the Albpetrol privatization and the development of the master plan for establishing a gas network in Albania.
The two Prime Ministers signed agreements for a mutual defense and encouragement of the investments, which, according to them, is a promising development for the investment climate.
