Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future From the Conference “English language and the education system as a new
opportunity”, the Albanian Prime Minister, Sali Berisha, declared that
every student should finish the high school with at least two foreign
languages, with English as primary.
After saying that he had learned English through the BBC, the Prime Minister proposed to start the teaching of English in the first years of school.
“It is important to consolidate English from the third grade and to the obligatory high school graduation tests, as the first important foreign language for every Albanian. Every child must graduate from the high school with two foreign languages. The second could be French, Italian, German, Spanish or Chinese. China is today the second economic power”, Berisha declared.
The British Ambassador to Tirana, Nicolas Cannon, illustrated the work of the British Council with some statistics.
“More than 700 candidates chose the British Council for testing their english through the International English Testing System. The Albanian universities chose this system for testing the English of the students that apply for PhDs. This is a test that is used by 7000 organizations worldwide”, Cannon declared.
British Council, the Organization of the United Kingdom for Education and Cultural Relationships has been created in Albania since 1994 and has constantly offered support for the learning of English in all levels of the Albanian education.
