Berisha changes strategy

The Albanian Prime Minister, Sali Berisha, changed strategy about the
time when the Democrats will discuss and vote the Constitutional amends
regarding the high rank official immunity lifting and the Socialist
Party package for the other Constitutional amends.

By reiterating that the majority’s position remains unchanged against the Socialists’ package, Berisha welcomed the stance of the SP leader, Edi Rama, who suggested that the opposition’s vote for the immunity will be in favor right after the Parliament will discuss the opposition’s package. A few days earlier, the Democrats of the Legislation Council asked three weeks to scrutinize this initiative of the SP, but through another moderated move, Berisha asked for the dates to be appointed earlier, within September, so that the country may have a chance to receive the EU candidate status this October.

“Since September is critical for the assessment of Albania’s achievements, I would ask to everyone to make everything possible to appoint an earlier date for the Parliamentary voting session about the Socialists’ propositions, about which we have already expressed our position. If possible, this procedure should end within the deadline in question. This would be the best news that we could give to our EU and world partners. I don’t know what will exactly be done, but at least the dates will not be afer September”, Berisha declared.

Berisha leaves an open possibility for the referendum process, if the Parliament will fail and will approve the law for limiting the immunity.
