Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future Being in an international economic crisis that has obliged the mother
banks in Europe to tighten their hand in giving loans, the Albanian
Prime Minister, Sali Berisha, believes that the European Institutions
must review their policies for supporting the private sector.
Berisha raised this theory as a concerning problem that must be resolved in the meeting held in Slovenia with the new European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, Suma Chakrabarti. According to Berisha, the support and strengthening of the private sectors with facilities that incite investments is vital for guaranteeing an economic growth, employment and development. Berisha declared that the role of EBRD might be big and might ease the effect created by the lack of loans in the private sector, which keeps generating new projects and needs funds.
During the meeting with the EBRD director, Berisha underlined that countries like Albania, even they are not part of the Eurozone, suffer the effects of the European bank policies. He believes that this situation must be improved by the financial institutions, such as the EBRD.
Berisha mentioned the real difficulties in the Albanian economy during the speech at the strategic forum of Bled, in Slovenia, which promotes a high level dialogue between the private and public sector for key issues that are concerning 21st century Europe. Despite the difficulties that come from the decreased remittances from emigrants, the decrease of exports with Italy, due to the crisis, and the problems created with Euro in the banking system, Berisha underlines that Albania is not feeling any recession thanks to the economic model that is based on a small government, low taxes and market liberalization. Although the Eurozone crisis is expected to last, Berisha declared that a major project for the Albanians is the EU membership. Berisha said that despite the slowing down of this process due to the wrong and failed decisions taken by the opposition, Albania is making everything possible to deserve the EU candidate status at the EU.
