The Albanian Prime Minister, Sali Berisha, visited for more than two
hours the Socialist Movement for Integration leader, Ilir Meta, at his
house in the “Block” area, four days before the Supreme Court takes the
decision for the corruption case of the PM’s main ally.
This cannot be called a visit of courtesy for the New Year, since it was January 12th and these celebrations are left behind. But Berisha’s long visit at Ilir Meta’s house suggests that it might have been a dinner invitation.
On January 6th, the Prosecution asked the Court 2 years in prison for Ilir Meta and 1 million ALL fine. The Court will announce the decision on January 16th, closing this way the trial for the highest government official ever sat on the defendant’s bench.
While Berisha was in Meta’s house, Police has blocked the vehicle movement and has not allowed the journalists and cameramen to stand in front of the apartment building entrance.
The Socialist MP, Erjon Brace, considered this meeting as a clear pressure against the Supreme Court. Brace wrote on Facebook:
“This is a gang, not a government. The pressure to the Supreme Court is a state crime. This is where the impunity culture comes from. They have a very big common thing: active corruption”, Brace’s message underlines.
