Battle for CEC returns

10/04/2013 00:00

The Commission of Laws started an unplanned meeting after the Democratic
Party requested to replace one of the Central Election Commission
members, the representative of the Socialist Movement for Integration,
Ilirjan Muho.

The DP Parliamentary Group leader, Astrit Patozi, declared that CEC is misbalanced now that SMI is out of the ruling coalition.

The Electoral Code says that two members are elected by the biggest ruling party, two by the biggest opposition party, and one from the biggest second parties from the respective coalitions. This formula guaranteed SMI and United for Human Rights Party one place each at the CEC.

DP says that this is the basis of the elections, and now it is misbalanced.  For this reason, the Democratic Party says that the SMI representative should be replaced with one member from the ruling party.

SMI writes to Ambassadors: DP politicizing CEC

The Socialist Movement for Integration sent a letter to the trio of ambassadors, expressing their concern for the initiative of the Democratic Party to replace the SMI at the Central Election Commission.

The letter says that SMI considers this a political move by destabilizing nature, which is openly politicizing CEC and trying to establish a violent political majority in the election management process for June 23rd.

“This is the spirit that will be distributed in the other high rank Commissions. SMI will react politically and in a proportional way, and will use all legal tools to block this violent and concerning political act”, the letter says.

“We will not allow politics to interfere with inner CEC issues, and will not tolerate any attempt to compromise and manipulate the electoral process”, the message continues.

Manjani: No CEC changes

SMI reacted immediately, stating that whoever touches CEC, will touch the standard of these elections.

Ylli Manjani, Secretary of the Electoral Matters at the SMI, declared that the CEC can be changed only in 2015.

Rama accuses Berisha of ruining CEC

Opposition leader, Edi Rama, commented on Twitter the recent debates about a possible change at CEC, after the creation of the coalition between the SP and SMI.

“Nothing saves the family party of Sali Berisha. Changing the CEC now would damage the entire election institution and the country’s image”.

Rama says that touching CEC with anti-Constitutional violence shows what kind of regime SP will remove from power on June 23rd, and that this is a clear sign of panic by the Prime Minister.
