Lulzim Basha, the leader of the Democratic Party, listed a series of
elements, which, according to the opposition, prove that the June 21st
elections do not fulfill the democratic standards.
In the first meeting of the Parliamentary Group after the elections, Basha listed problems such as running of people with criminal records, voters’ lists, threats against candidates, blackmails, vote purchase and usage of government structures. He said that these problems undermined the process.
According to Basha, the majority ignored the requests of the international community to withdraw candidates with criminal records. He said that their gangs were used against citizens, involving criminals such as Arben Frroku in Puka, who left the country before the Court of Appeal gave a life sentence for him.
Basha said that candidates have been threatened for their lives and violence has been used against the opposition.
Despite these factors, Basha interpreted the vote for their candidates as a growth of the Democratic Party. He admitted that this is a difficult period for the Democratic Party, but he said that from September, this will be left behind.
“The Democratic Party will be open for everyone who wants to oppose the government. The Democratic Party has been in difficult times, has learned how to recover and will recover”, Basha declared.
