The Democratic Party leader, Lulzim Basha, met with high level leaders of the European Popular Parties in Brussels, where he confirmed that the opposition supports the opening of accession negotiations with Albania based on merit.

Basha underlined that the process is being damaged by the failure to fulfill key criteria, such as the fight against organized crime and corruption, capturing of the judiciary and sabotage of the judiciary reform by the Albanian Prime Minister, Edi Rama, with the purpose to defend bigger fish of the crime world, who bought him votes to create an illegitimate majority.

“If it is just a matter of political will to take things ahead, we would insist to open Albania’s accession negotiations, although the government has failed with all five priorities. But we know that this is not only about political will and that many member countries consider this a process for encouraging reforms. And everyone is concerned that the reforms not only are not progressing, but they are also making steps back, such as the judiciary reform, in which the recommendations of the International Monitoring Operation have been ignored with the purpose to control the High Councils of the Judiciary and Prosecution, so that tomorrow they can control the Special Prosecution Against Corruption, for the same reason that they are changing the Parliament’s regulation, which is for not allowing incriminated politicians to face justice, but to defend them the same way they are defending Tahiri”, Basha said after the meeting.

He also confirmed the stance of the Albanian opposition that the political solution for Albania is an anti-mafia government that makes way for free and fair elections.
