Basha and Rama meet, but with different stances

06/06/2016 00:00

Two hours before the meeting between Edi Rama and Lulzim Basha, compromise seems to be distant.

Despite the efforts of the international community inside and outside the country, it seems that the Democratic Party has not withdrawn from their condition for reserved posts at the new justice institutions. They are simply waiting for the majority to accept it.

Top Channel’s editor for politics, Elona Meco, was live on today’s news edition and confirmed that the majority had changed the meeting formula, with PM Rama being accompanied by Fatmir Xhafaj and Petrit Vasili from the SMI.

“Vasili is not only the vice leader of the SMI, but also the most trusted man of Ilir Meta who guarantees the votes of the SMI for the reform. This means that the majority is compact. But this doesn’t mean that the DP might change their stance due to the presence of the SMI in this emeting. Meta declared that the SMI votes are for the government draft that are supported by the international community”, Meco said.

TCH: The Democratic Party seem to keep standing firmly behind their stance. But the international community is also insisting. What have been their efforts and are they just mediators, or do they have a stance of their own on this issue?

Elona Meço: The international partners don’t express their stances openl in such cases. Federica Mogherini said that the Parliament should secure the votes this week. But the US Ambassador also visited the opposition leader at his office, in order to find an agreement for the DP to vote the draft. The full agreement was about the reserved posts. The majority offered two thirds of the votes for the opposition, but they don’t agree. It will be announced at 17:00 if the DP agrees or not, but I don’t think they ever will.

TCH: Mogherini reiterated yesterday the stance supported by Commissioner Hahn. She spoke about two-thirds and for individual responsibilities of MPs. Is this the a warning that the DP could have a crack inside their ranks, if the justice draft is voted unilaterally in Parliament?

Elona Meço: If we make room for a reasonable speculation, yes. There are some Parliament Members of the Democratic Party who have reiterated their readiness to vote the draft, but a DP meeting has not allowed divisions. This week it will be seen if the draft will have agreement or not.

Lulzim Bashi will be together with Oerd Bylykbashi and the Parliament leader, Edi Paloka.
