The Democratic Party leader, Lulzim Basha, participated in the European
Popular Parties meeting in Brussels, where he asked support for the
candidate status in June, by also showing several concerns, as he
declared after the meeting.
“There are huge concerns. The fact that the majority has decided to illegally cut constitutional mandates of independent institutions, rather than governing the country, is seen as a huge concern by the member countries and European Union institutions. Our view as opposition is to focus our attention on the problems of rule of law and democracy in Albania. The status not only doesn’t hamper this, but would make the Albanian government and the majority – who are responsible for these anticonstitutional and illegal acts – even more accountable after receiving the status”, Basha declared.
The EPP meeting is held before the summit of the European Union Head of States and Governments, and aims to reach consensus between the right wing parties for terms that will be later reviewed by the European Council.
