Bank reduces interest rate to 4%

Bank of Albania decided to reduce the interest base with 0.25 percentage
points, bringing it down to 4%, the lowest level in history.
The decision was announced by Governor Ardian Fullani after the meeting of the Supervision Board. The Central Bank had already declared that they would facilitate the currency policy even further, if necessary.
The low inflation, almost at 2%, enabled them to take this step. Since last August, the Albanian Bank has decreased the interest rates four times in total, trying to reduce the debt cost. But the loan interests have remained high due to the big government debt and the hesitation of the foreign banks to buy treasury bonds.
